New York & Cuba
Last year and the beginning of this year was full of traveling for me. So many countries in a short space of time, such a privilege! Often I get into a city or the area where I will be working a day or so before my work starts. I do my best to get out onto the streets to experience each place. With my trusty FUJI X-T1, compact and powerful, I try document as much as possible in a short space of time. I have complied a video montage of photos taken in both New York USA, Havana and Cienfuegos in Cuba. A day and a half in New York, starting early in the mornings, lots of walking and subway catching, what an amazing city, certainly one of my favourites! There are no words to describe Cuba, the few days I had between Havana and Cienfuegos, thank you Walter, what an experience! I would like to thank Greg from Hack Media in Johannesburg, who brought me into the mix work wise and allowed me to get to these beautiful places.
Hi John, i’m really impressed with your work. I’m also interested in your thoughts on the Fujifilm XT-1 as an alternative to the Canon 5D mark III, do you think it will be a working camera for weddings?, they have recently released a XF 16-55 f/2.8 (24-82) a likely alternative to the Canon 24-70.
Jim
Thanks Jim for your kind words. The Fuji XT-1 is most certainly a capable camera that could indeed replace a 5Dmk111 in the bag. I personally shoot with primes, but I am sure that Fuji’s 16-55 is a superb lens, I am yet to see a bad xf lens made by fuji, unlike other manufacturers. I think good glass is paramount, before one looks at camera body specs, so I would rather choose a system with amazing lens quality and low megapixels over the opposite.
There are a couple things to consider however, especially when shooting weddings. Focus speed in low light and lack of high speed sync with ettl. The new Nissan i40 flash allows for ettl under 180th and high speed sync in manual flash only (100th to 4000th), so no ettl. A bit of creativity is needed here. Lastly, if you use off-camera flash, then you may want to consider ND filters, because at 180th and 200ISO (lowest in RAW), F1.2 / F2.8 is not gonna be possible for portraits in sunlight. You will also have to use manual control for off-camera flash, which isn’t that hard really. Lastly, you may need to shoot wide angle and zone focus with a couple off-camera flashes setup around the dance floor for faced paced action in low light. As long as you are shooting wide angle, at around f4 OR f5.6 you should get all in focus and you will get cool light and flare with the speed lights around the dance floor.
I am considering the full swop over to Fuji after waiting to see the reviews out there of the Sony A7Rmk11.
Awesome quality in a compact system.
Cheers.
John excellent excellent work I enjoy all your videos, it’s neat when a photo enthusiast like myself with an XT-1 see’s a professional like yourself using the same camera and what can been done with it. Question though would it ever be possible to do a you tube video on how you set up your camera when just walking around just taking photo’s of just anything that catches your eye both country or city. I think it would be enjoyed by many. Anyways keep up the great work that video with Sir Richard Branson was awesome. Take Care,
